Seán O'Meara
Wetland ecology and accessible birdwatching experiences for older adults across Ireland's river systems
Myneighborhoodbaker Ltd
Seán O'Meara brings 16 years of hands-on experience working across Irish river systems and protected habitats. He's designed accessible walking routes that actually work—routes that let older walkers explore wetlands without compromise. Not theoretical. Not compliant-just-barely. Real pathways that combine ecology with genuine usability.
What sets Seán apart is his refusal to treat accessibility as an afterthought. He starts every project by asking how to make it genuinely usable rather than merely compliant. His work on the Little Brosna callows has become a model for other Irish wetland areas, proving that you don't need to choose between protecting sensitive habitats and welcoming older visitors.

Areas of Expertise
What Seán specializes in
Wetland Ecology
Deep knowledge of Irish river systems, callows habitats, and wetland management practices. Understands both the science and the practical realities of protecting these spaces.
Bird Hide Design
Designed and implemented accessible bird viewing infrastructure across the Little Brosna callows and other protected areas, balancing wildlife disturbance concerns with visitor experience.
Accessible Route Planning
Specializes in creating walking routes that work for older adults and people with mobility limitations. Every route considers gradient, surface type, rest points, and viewing accessibility.
Inclusive Experience Design
Develops nature-based programs and experiences specifically designed for pensioners and older walkers. Understands accessibility isn't just about ramps—it's about meaningful engagement with natural heritage.
Site Assessment & Planning
Conducts comprehensive accessibility audits of natural sites, identifying barriers and opportunities. Combines ecological constraints with visitor needs in practical recommendations.
Stakeholder Collaboration
Works directly with heritage organizations, local councils, and community groups. Skilled at building consensus between conservation priorities and public access goals.
Philosophy & Approach
How Seán thinks about his work
Age Shouldn't Be a Barrier
Seán grew up in rural County Tipperary, where childhood explorations of the Brosna River valley sparked a lifelong fascination with wetland habitats. But it wasn't until his work in accessibility-focused outdoor education that he recognized a significant gap: most nature-based activities in Ireland simply weren't designed for older walkers. That realization drove his career shift.
His conviction is straightforward. Age shouldn't lock you out of experiencing Ireland's remarkable natural heritage. That means routes aren't just theoretically accessible—they're genuinely usable. Rest points aren't afterthoughts. Viewing platforms are positioned so you can actually see the birds without standing on tiptoes.
Ecology First, Then Access
What distinguishes Seán's approach is his refusal to compromise on habitat protection in the name of access. When Tipperary County Council commissioned him to develop accessible bird hide locations and walking routes along the Little Brosna callows in 2015, he didn't treat accessibility as something bolted on afterward. Instead, he started with the ecology.
Where should routes run to minimize disturbance? What viewing angles work without pushing people deeper into sensitive areas? How can hides be positioned so they protect both the habitat and the visitor experience? This work became a model for other Irish wetland areas precisely because it refuses false choices.
Career Timeline
Key milestones in Seán's professional journey
BSc Environmental Science, University of Limerick

Field Officer, Irish Wildlife Trust
Three years conducting habitat surveys and species monitoring across multiple Irish river valleys. Developed field research skills and deep understanding of conservation challenges.
Postgraduate Diploma, Trinity College Dublin
Completed advanced qualification in Disability-Inclusive Tourism. Recognized the significant gap between conservation work and accessible nature-based experiences for older adults.
Senior Wetland & Accessibility Specialist, myneighborhoodbaker Ltd
Leads design and management of accessible walking routes and bird hides across Tipperary's protected areas. Commissioned by Tipperary County Council to develop the Little Brosna callows project—work that's since become a model for other Irish wetland sites.
How Seán Approaches Projects
The practical methodology behind his work
Site Assessment
Comprehensive ecological survey and accessibility audit. Identifies sensitive habitat areas, existing constraints, and opportunities. Walks the ground multiple times in different seasons.
Stakeholder Engagement
Collaborates with heritage organizations, local councils, and community groups. Gathers input from older walkers about what they actually need, not assumptions.
Design & Planning
Creates routes and viewing infrastructure that protect habitat while genuinely serving older visitors. Considers gradient, surface type, rest points, viewing angles, and wayfinding.
Implementation & Testing
Oversees construction with ongoing quality checks. Tests routes with actual older walkers before launch. Makes adjustments based on real-world feedback.
Monitoring & Adaptation
Tracks habitat impacts and visitor usage over time. Adjusts management practices as needed. Shares findings with other organizations working on similar projects.
Notable Projects
Significant work and achievements
Little Brosna Callows Accessible Route Network
2015–Present
Designed and implemented accessible walking routes and bird hides across the Little Brosna callows in County Tipperary. The project demonstrates how sensitive wetland habitats can be opened to older visitors without compromising ecological integrity. This work became a model for accessible design in Irish wetland areas and is referenced in heritage management across the country.
Tipperary County Council Accessibility Audit Program
2016–2018
Led comprehensive accessibility audits of 12 publicly-owned natural sites across County Tipperary. Provided detailed recommendations for route improvements, signage, and viewing infrastructure. Many recommendations were implemented, improving access for older walkers and people with mobility limitations.
Pensioner Group Partnership Program
2018–Present
Developed ongoing partnerships with local pensioner groups and active retirement organizations. Conducts regular guided walks, provides nature interpretation, and gathers feedback to continuously improve route design. These groups provide invaluable input on what actually works for older visitors.
Bird Hide Accessibility Standards Development
2017–2019
Worked with heritage organizations across Ireland to develop practical accessibility standards for bird hides and viewing platforms. Created guidelines that balance wildlife protection with genuine visitor access. Standards are now used as reference by conservation organizations nationwide.
